"Courage, the original definition of courage, when it first came to the English language- it's from the Latin word 'cor', meaning heart- and the original definition was to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart."

When people hear "courage" they typically think of grand heroics or lions roaring. When I hear courage I think about Brene Brown's explanation of the word. To show your heart- your story, to someone else is an act of bravery that does not compare to grand heroics and theatrics. I can think of nothing more vulnerable than a wide open heart that is full of painful or shameful stories.
The point of my therapy approach is to listen to and witness you tell your story. I personally believe that when you open that door on locked away hurt, it doesn't have to be an entry point for more more pain, but rather an exit for the buried hurt that's been weighing heavy on your heart for years. Though a person's past can be a big part of therapy, I like to keep a lot of the focus on writing the story of their future. |
